The bidet, French for "pony," is a low-mounted plumbing fixture used to wash the genitalia, inner buttocks, and anus. The etymology comes from the Old French term, "bider," which translates "to ride," as the user sits upon the bidetas though he or she were riding a pony. The bidet is also referred to as the "garden hose" because of how it cleans much like a gardener watering his plants. Bidets once served as a practical way for couples to prepare themselves before sex, as well as to rinse themselves afterward.
